COURSE OBJECTIVES
Mathematics is a practical, exciting and creative discipline that should be appreciated and enjoyed by all of our middle school students. As outlined in the New York State Leaning Standards for Mathematics (Learning Standard Three), the focus of mathematics must encompass the following content areas:
Seven Content Areas for Mathematics
1. Mathematical Reasoning 2. Number and Numeration 3. Operations
4. Modeling/Multiple Representation 5. Measurement 6. Uncertainty 7. Patterns/Functions
GRADE 7
Grade 7 Mathematics (7R)
This course begins with a unit on number systems. Operations using integers are introduced and provide a solid foundation to build upon. Problem solving strategies are discussed, and integrated throughout the school year. The curriculum reinforces the basic skills and extends knowledge to include concepts in algebra, geometry, probability, statistics and measurement. Students are required to explain mathematical concepts and explain their reasoning orally and in writing. Both arithmetic and algebraic skills are taught at this level. Questions that model the state assessment exam are given throughout the school year to ensure that students are mastering the basic skills in mathematics.
Pre-Algebra 7
This course serves as an introduction to the New York State Algebra 1 curriculum as well as a preparation for the New York State Assessment test. It provides students’ a strong foundation in Algebra while also preparing for future study of geometry, probability, and data analysis.
